Who would have thought we have been skydiving in Dunkeswell Airfield for 50 years!? The anniversary party will be held right here at the Aviator coffee bar / restaurant on Saturday 13th of August. Old and new skydivers will come together to celebrate, share memories and learn more about this amazing Drop Zone. It will also be the 30 year anniversary for Royal Marines World Record 24 CRW stack.
Since Col. Jim Goldsworthy started parachuting in Dunkeswell Airfield in 1966 there have been 4 parachuting schools here:
1966-1997 Royal Navy Royal Marines Sport Parachute Association
1975-1991 Dunkeswell International Skydiving Centre
1992-2006 Devon and Somerset Parachuting School
2006 till now Skydive 99/ Skydive Buzz
Looking back at the photos we can see how the popular skydiving disciplines have changed: from accuracy to swooping, from CRW to XRW, from building stars (Dunk’s unbeaten British record 34 way star set in 1986) to flying in angle tracking groups. The only thing that hasn’t changed here is the backdrop of the beautiful Devon and the fact that there are always people passionate about the sport here.
